I love the friendliness of the Ni-Van people. Kevin is a young Ni-Van who is a teacher in New Zealand. He was home visiting his family in Vanuatu. He was staying in the same motel as us and we bumped into him in the rain in Port Vila and had a chat. Kevin told us on his first day of teaching school in Christchurch, New Zealand, the earthquake hit. He was evacuated to Wellington and has been teaching there ever since.

I love the Mamas at the Women's Market in Port Vila. The market is right on the foreshore and full of wonderful things to buy. I love the baskets as they have a different style from every island. My favourite lady and stall is Stella from No.13. She has the best selection of baskets and is happy to tell you where each style is from.

I love the Baywatch Restaurant on Fatumaru Bay in Port Vila. It has the most wonderful views of the harbour and the food is great. They have a great lunchtime deal for 1000 vatu (approx $10) and with that you get a free lime juice. The owner is French so the food has to be good... right?

Jill's Cafe

I love Jill's Cafe on the Lini Highway in the heart of Port Vila. It has an American style menu....burgers and tacos etc and they do the best breakfast in town in my opinion. It is owned by an American couple Jill and Rick so the meals are genuine. They don't open for dinner though but have a late lunch there and you won't need dinner!

Corned Beef, Tuna or Mackerel?

I love the supermarkets in Vanuatu with their colourful displays of tinned corned beef, tuna and mackerel. These items are obviously pretty much part of the Ni-Van's staple diet otherwise the supermarket shelves wouldn't be full of it.

Port Vila Town

I love the hustle and bustle of Port Vila town. You can grab a bus just about anywhere and for 150 vatu the bus driver will take you just about anywhere. That's only about $1.50....it's a bargain.

I love Sophie who is the attendant at the 'Pablik Toilet' on the Port Vila Foreshore. The toilet is right next to the Nambawan Cafe which I frequent during my stays in Port Vila. That also means I visit Sophie a lot. It's 40 vatu to visit the Ladies Room and I always had a joke with Sophie about getting my money's worth of toilet paper. I took this pic of Sophie on the day I was leaving and she had given me the biggest hugs and kisses. I think she was genuinely sad to say Good Bye to me. So typical of the warmth and friendliness of the local Ni-Van.

Anchor Inn

I love the Anchor Inn. It is one of Port Vila's popular drinking holes. We always meet our friend Simex at the Anchor Inn as his sister-in-law, Rimi works as a waitress there. There was a cruise ship in town when we visited this day and as we walked in Rimi walked up to us and with a straight face and told us that "she was only allowed to serve tourists here!" Ni-Vans have a wicked sense of humour and I have been caught out a few times I can tell you. If you respond with a "Ba u sick!" you will get the biggest laugh out of them.

Cruise Ship Day

I love these beautiful Green Iguanas that these pikininis come out with when the cruise ship is in. In Port Vila the cruise ships come in very often so the hustle and bustle of the town goes on overdrive. Everyone is out to make some vatu on that day! Can you blame them?

I love Rozanna who works in customer relations at the Erakor Island Resort. Rozanna is originally from Tanna Island, home of the famous Mt Yasur volcano. She lived very close to the volcano on Tanna and she told me she remembers rolling down the black sand of the volcano as a pikinini!

I love Bislama which is a form of Pidgin English. This is a sign for a local Kava Bar or Nakamal in Port Vila. If you read the sign you can pretty much make out what is said. Mifala... gudfala... yufala... tufala... you gotta just love it!!

Fatumaru Bay

I love Fatumaru Bay which is just a short walk along the Port Vila Foreshore and not far from 'taon'. A lot of the local Ni-Van bring their pikininis here to play and to swim. It's a beautiful harbour especially when the Tall Ship 'Soren Larsen' is moored there.

I love these little Digicel booths that are all over Port Vila. Digicel is a mobile phone company and these booths are where you buy your top up credit. Everyone has a mobile phone in Vanuatu since Digicel brought in some competition.

Lautano II

I love Lautano II, one of Vanuatu's favourite String Bands, I was lucky to see them perform at the Fest' Nalenga and had to pick up their new CD called 'Climate Change'. The new CD launch was at the big Nakamal on the Port Vila foreshore. It's an awesome CD by the way.

The local Ni-Van use a lot of hand signals in their daily lives and it is very hard to get them to pose without using them. This mother and son are a prime example. These two are Pentecost Islanders living in Port Vila.

I love the Women's Market on the Port Vila Foreshore. It is so bright and colourful with an abundance of grass skirts, leis and Mother Hubbards. The Mamas are a wonderful, friendly bunch of ladies.

Fest' Napuan

I love the Fest' Napuan. It is Vanuatu's very own Music Festival which is held in Saralana Park every year. It is mainly Reggae and the bands that play come from all over the South Pacific. I was lucky enough to attend the 2011 festival and it was awesome.

I love the comedy act called 'Monkey Boys' that I watched at the Fest' Nalenga and the Fest' Napuan. They had the audience in hysterics and I found them very funny as well even though I didn't understand much of what they said as they spoke in Bislama. They must be good!!

I love the Fest' Nalenga. It is the String Band section of the Fest' Napuan which is a Music Festival held in Port Vila every year. I was lucky enough to attend the 2011 festival as I just love Vanuatu's unique and infectious String Band Music.

I love Port Vila Harbour. It is a beautiful harbour and there is always an amazing array of ships that boats and ships that frequent it. On my visit this time the tall ship 'Soren Larsen' is here for a visit. It looks beautiful in the harbour and gives Port Vila a real look of yesteryear.

I love the Pig Tusk symbol of Vanuatu. It is a very important symbol for the Ni-Van. It has always been a form of money in Vanuatu and a few years ago the government made it legal tender. I can't imagine trying to buy something in Port Vila with it but I can certainly see how it would be used amongst the village people.

I love the rugged foreshore of Lenakel. Tanna Island has a real primitive, rugged feel about it. These young girls were about to do a spot of fishing there in the rockpools.

I love the Mt Yasur volcano on Tanna Island. The world's most accessible volcano as you can walk to the crater. I love this shot I took of it from a good look out point. It was blowing it's stack!

Man Tanna Nakamal

I love the Nakamals that are everywhere in Vanuatu. They are the local 'Watering Holes' like the Aussie Pub. Kava, unlike, alcohol, is a relaxant so you would never have the violence that occurs from alcohol. This Nakamal is in Lenakel, Tanna Island not too far from Yasur Volcano.

I love the famous Banyan tree on Tanna Island that the Council of Chiefs use as their Nakamal or place of meeting. Local villagers come to seek advice from the Chiefs who in turn seek advice from the Banyan tree.

Leweton Women's Water Music

Seven ladies from the remote, northern tropical islands of Vanuatu, wade into the sea up to their waist. Dressed in the traditional costumes of Gaua, made from flowers and leaves, these women are about to perform the mystical Water Music. The women sidle into a half moon formation. Their bodies lean forward over the water waiting for the signal. The leader’s head dips in a nod. Hands are united in action. The water is beaten into a rhythmic swirl. The palm of their hands slaps each passing wave. Their hands move closer to their bodies and then away again. I had heard all about the Vanuatu Water Music and I was lucky enough to catch them here in Brisbane at South Bank. It was absolutely freezing that day. They were very brave ladies!!

Black Sands Of Tanna Island

I love the Black Sands of Tanna Island with Mt Yasur in the background letting off steam. It looks just like a lunascape and is quite scary with sound of the volcano booming in the distance.

Port Vila Buses

I love the buses in Port Vila. They are really just vans with a 'B' placed on the number plates. Be ready for a tour of the town before you reach your destination as it really depends where the other passengers are going. A great way to see Port Vila and meet the people as you won't go far before you are having a wonderful conversation with somebody. A great way to 'mekem' friends and a cheap way to take a tour of Port Vila! For 150 vatu or $1.50 who needs the tourist traps. And of course it's even better if there is some reggae or string band playing on the radio.

Erakor Island

I love Erakor Island Resort. If you aren't staying there you can still have a lovely day there for the price of a small ferry ride across the lagoon. Your ticket can then be used to pay for lunch. It's a win win situation and well worth it for a day spent in paradise!

I love South Pentecost Island. I went there to experience the Naghol or Land Diving which happens between April and June every year. The beaches are made up of volcanic rocks. You can see Ambrym Island and it's two active volcanoes from there.

I love the art of the Mataso Printmakers. The day after our visit with the Mataso Printmakers we met up with Simeon, or Simex as he is called. He wanted to give us a gift. We were just blown away when we saw it. Simeon presented us with the most beautiful painting called 'Coconut Man'. It was painted on a mat that his Auntie had woven. Thanks Simeon we will treasure it forever.

The Mataso people were very friendly but a little confused as to why we were there. In the end I think they were quite overwhelmed that we knew about their art and had made a 'pilgrimage' to meet them. Simeon was the first artist we met and he called his brother Jack on his m who eventually turned up. Jack was the spokesman for the group and his wife Herveline is one of the printmakers.

Batik - Our Guide

I love the Mataso Printmakers of Vanuatu. I discovered them at the Asia Pacific Triennal 6 exhibition at GOMA in Brisbane last year. I posted some images on my other blog Juju Mamas. While visiting Port Vila recently I decided to try and meet them. We discovered they were living not very far from our motel and an employee of the motel, Batik offered to take us there.
They weren't easy to find but with Batik's persistence we met a few of the printmakers at their village.

I love the Women's Market on Port Vila Harbour right next to the Nambawan Cafe. My favourite stall and stallholder is Stella at Shop 13. I met Stella on my first visit to Port Vila and she always remembers me when I return and gives me big hugs. Stella has the best range of Aelan baskets in the market even my housekeepers at my motel vouched for this. She has taught me which islands each style comes from and I always buy a new one or two from her when I come back to Vanuatu.

I love Juliette Pita, she is Vanuatu's foremost contemporary artist. I met her at a handicrafts exhibition at the Alliance Francais in Port Vila. Juliane is from the island of Erromango and has exhibited her art all over the world. Juliette specialises in tapestry and considers her main inspiration to be the traditional cultures of Vanuatu. The rest of her family are also talented artists. I recognised her work at the Nambawan Cafe, one of my favourite haunts in Port Vila.

I love Beth and Tony at the Coral Motel. They were our wonderful hosts at the Coral Motel, Port Vila. It became a 'Home away from Home' for us during our 3 week stay. Tony and Beth have a wealth of experience as they have lived in Vanuatu for 11 years and are happy to share their knowledge with anyone who may be interested. Coral Motel, Port Vila

I love the Coral Motel. We stayed there for three weeks out of the four we spent in Port Vila. The first week was in a resort which was nice but our stay at the Coral Motel was much more fun. We had a great room which overlooked the Lini Highway on the way into town from the airport. It was always entertaining! The rooms are actually apartments with their own kitchens and very new bathrooms. They are very clean and are serviced every day. I can't recommend the Coral Motel highly enough and it seems that Trip Advisor agrees with me.

Pentecost Island

I love the people from South Pentecost Island. We flew there to watch the famous Naghol or Land Diving as it is also called. The Naghol is only done during the months of April, May and June when the vines are ready. They don't receive many visitors during the rest of the year which explains their general shyness and curiosity. I guess we must have seemed like a odd looking bunch alighting from the plane.

Ambrym Island

I love island hopping in Vanuatu on small planes as they are such scenic flights. We flew over the two volcanoes on Ambrym island on our way to Pentecost Island. Ambrym Island is the home of black magic in Vanuatu and it certainly looked very ominous!

Les Rendez Vous

I love Les Rendez Vous, a lovely French restaurant in Port Vila. They do a great lunch deal and their meals are always superb and you get a nice glass of French wine or Tusker beer thrown into the deal. The views are amazing looking out over Port Vila Harbour.

I love the tropical rain outbursts in Vanuatu. One minute you are strolling around the shops in Port Vila and the next minute there is a swimming pool instead of a road. It certainly cools everything down for a while.

Island Hopping

I love island hopping in Vanuatu but I could think of better ways to do it than to travel on this old rust bucket. This 'fast' catamaran goes all the way to Espiritu Santo in the north stopping at a few islands on it's way. It also travels to Tanna Island in the south. Both good distances.

Erakor Island Chapel

I love this little outdoor chapel on Erakor Island. It is supposedly the first church built in The Pacific Islands. A brave missionary family established itself here and lost three of their children. The wife eventually died of dysentery brought by a passing ship. The house still remains to this day. The chapel is used for wedding ceremonies today.

Champagne Bay

I love Champagne Bay on the island of Espiritu Santo. It is touted to be the most beautiful beach in the South Pacific. My vote is in on that one. Elephant Island is in the background. This is where the American troops waited for the troop carriers to pick them up at the end of World War II. Our Ni-Van friends told us that is why it was named Champagne Bay because of the popping of champagne bottles in celebration. There is another story but I kinda like that one.

Inyeug Island

I love Inyeug Island, a tiny little islet about 1.5 kms across from Aneityum Island. They lie south of the Vanuatu island chain. Inyeug island was used by the allied forces in World War II as a landing strip for small aircraft. In 1975 Queen Elizabeth visited Vanuatu on the Royal Yacht Britannia and she and her party stopped off at Inyeug Island for a picnic. She named it Mystery Island and it has been called that ever since. It is now a popular cruise ship destination.
